Dearest Dad, A kind, loving, caring and cheerful father to your girls, you worked hard at work and in the house to make sure that we were happy and well looked after. I am so so privileged to have had you as my father. For the early part of my life, we were both so busy at school/university and at work respectively that we didn't see each other very much. You thoughtfully made up for it by sending me a postcard every week which I will always treasure. When Oliver and I bought our first house in 2006, you became a big part of my life again and as you retired we spent more time together. My friends tell me that you were very proud of me when I married Oliver in 2008. Later in 2010, you were over the moon when you learnt that you would shortly have a grandson to pass onto your love for steam trains! If there is only one thing that I could say about you, and I know that Oliver will agree, it is that you were a wonderful inspiration. As a father and father-in-law, you loved us, supported us, advised us and made sure that we enjoyed life to the full. Together with Mum, you both became our best friends; you showed us what a real married couple was all about. Teamwork. Making decisions together. Being organised. Looking after our property, possessions and finances. And more importantly, grabbing life with both hands and having fun. I know a lot of people in this Church will agree when I say that you and Mum were a wonderfully suited couple who had a big impact on our lives. It is so sad that you have gone, Dad. And so soon. You will live on through us, and through your grandson who was more than happy to sit on your lap and tenderfully stroke your moustache! If there is one thing I have to be thankful for in these sad circumstances, it is that you became a grandfather before you went. And an amusing and proud one at that! When i look at Reuben, his cheeky smile and dimples will simply remind me of you. Oliver and I will do our very best to make sure that Reuben never ever forgets you. Every time we see a steam train choo-ing away, we will think of you and tell Reuben a story or two about you. You will forever be in our thoughts, and we'll miss you very much. Finally, please rest assured that we will look after Mum for you. Lots of love always, Laura, Oliver and your darling grandson, Reuben xx
